Food is an essential aspect of Greek culture. Every meal celebrates life, love, and the simple pleasures of good food shared with family and friends. Prepare your taste buds for an unforgettable culinary journey through the sun-drenched flavours that will leave you wanting more.

Greek cuisine is famous for using quality, fresh local produce. Famous dishes include stuffed vine leaves, moussaka and meze (many taster dishes). Seafood is popular in coastal towns and undoubtedly worth a try. The Greeks are also known for their alcoholic drinks – ouzo, metaxa and the wine retsina.

Bask in endless days of sunshine and soak up the glorious Greek climate.

Greece is well known for its Mediterranean climate and endless sunshine. However, the winters are cold and the summers can be relentless, with temperatures soaring up to 40+C. So timing is key when looking to travel to Greece.

Spring is a popular time to visit Greek islands. The mountainside heathers are in bloom, cooler temperatures invite hiking opportunities, and you are outside school holidays. September is another favourable month for similar reasons, and the ocean will be at its warmest.

According to Greek mythology, the island of Rhodes was once the home of the sun god Helios. Helios was in love with a nymph named Rhodes. When his sunlight touched her skin, she transformed into an island, giving us the sun-blessed island of Rhodes.

UK nationals should apply for a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) before travelling to Greece for free treatment in a state hospital. Accidents and illness can happen, so it’s always best to be well-prepared with medical contingencies and travel insurance.

The summer heat can easily lead to sunstroke, dehydration and sunburn. It is essential to drink plenty of water, salt your food (to replace salts lost through sweat) and take regular breaks in the shade.

Drinking tap water in Athens and other big cities is safe. But drinking bottled water in other destinations, like the Greek islands, is best.

Where to go?

History and Culture

Greece has 17 Unesco World Heritage Sites, so you are spoilt for choice. A highlight has to be Athens, the city of the ancient gods and the birthplace of great philosophers. Explore the marble temples of the Acropolis and the magnificent Parthenon before venturing to the incredible Mount Olympus, the home of the Olympic Games.

For Kids and Teens

Pick one of the Ionian islands for family getaways. Relax on the golden beaches of Corfu, or enjoy one of the island's waterparks. Alternatively, go to Zante and take a swashbuckling day trip to Treasure Island Shipwreck Beach (Naviago Beach) or snorkel off Marathonisi (Turtle Island), where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs.

Relaxation

Any of the Greek Islands promise relaxation. Kefalonia is the quieter of the Ionian side. However, to truly escape the crowds, hop over to the Aegean side and let your days slip away with the tranquil tide and olive groves. Paros, Naxos, and Fira are some of the most beautiful and mesmerising Greek island resorts.

Action

Challenge yourself to hike Crete's 18 km-long Samaria Gorge, Europe's longest ravine, stretching from the White Mountains to the Libyan Sea. Remember, the summers get hot, so plan this trip wisely. Alternatively, the islands have an array of watersports and paragliding to keep the adrenaline pumping.

Nightlife

Hedonistic resorts abound, including Kardamena in Kos, Kavos on Corfu, and Faliraki on Rhodes. Greece is a popular destination for party-goers celebrating with friends. Almost every resort has a strip with bars and clubs to keep the night alive. Be cautious of opportunist pickpocketers in these busy areas, and consider taking out gadget cover.
